The past few years there’s been a big emphasis on how the aging baby boom generation is going to have to adjust as their bodies slow down. Aging in place has been the catchphrase that’s come about from the aging boomers. The phrase basically means preparing a house for accessibility so that it’s ready for when the time comes when it’s needed. A great example of aging in place is this wheelchair accessible bathroom for a baby boom couple in Austin, Texas by Libertas Interior Design Solutions of Houston, Texas.

Booming Vanities
We’ll begin in one half of the bathroom where there are two vanities. Both match each other in looks with long wooden roll-under counters. Built into the counters are white sinks with single lever faucets. If hand gripping becomes an issue, single lever faucets are easier to use than knob controls. Lighting in the space is done well with wall sconces, canister lights, and a large skylight that brings in tons of natural light. I would only advise insulation covers over the water lines below the sink if wheelchairs are used. This prevents potential leg burns from the hot water.

Shower Dual
Next up is the roll-in shower. The shower has a shower head at one end and a hand held shower at the other end. With one end having a built in bench. Along the back wall is a long and shiny grab bar. The shower floor blends in seamlessly with the rest of the bathroom floor. Lighting in the shower uses a combination of wall sconces and canister lights.

Toilet Style
Next to the shower is the toilet area. The toilet appears to be of a decent height that would be easy to stand up from or transfer onto. Nice shiny looking grab bars are mounted on the each wall next to the toilet. Finally the bathroom door is a wide pocket door that’s wheelchair friendly.

Conclusion
For any baby booming couple this would be a nice bathroom to have. One they could use and enjoy for years as they age. The look is clean and welcoming with great use of lighting. To see more of this bathroom and Libertas’s other work visit www.libertasinteriordesign.com.
