Few other pieces of equipment are as universally identified with exercise and working out as the treadmill. Seems like no gym would ever be complete without one. They can give a great aerobic and lower body workout for those that can use them. Treadmills can be a hazardous piece of machinery as we’ve all probably seen video of people falling and then being launched from them. Since they involve running they can also be hard on the joints. Recently a company called Alter G began making safer and more accessible anti-gravity treadmills.

Originally developed for NASA astronauts by Dr. Robert Whalen, the technology was converted for Earth use. What makes the Alter G treadmills different is the Differential Air Pressure (DAP) technology. Basically there is an inflatable airbag that surrounds the user’s waist and torso. This airbag then lifts the user and reduces the amount of body weight. Anywhere from 100% to 20% of body weight can be reduced. Another benefit is that the airbag keeps the user in place and upright. Preventing a falling and launching Youtube moment!

Alter G markets their treadmills for rehabilitation, sports rehabilitation, and senior use. For rehabilitation, reducing weight allows a running motion without the stress of weight on the legs. This reduces workout pain and increases range of motion. Which leads to a patient that is more willing to continue their workout and speed recovery.

For seniors or those with limited use of their legs, Alter G offers a way to stay active and continue lower body workouts. Continued exercise has the potential to increase health quality of life. Alter G even has an optional patient lift attachment to assist those who cannot walk onto the treadmill. In just a few short years Alter G treadmills can be found in hundreds of locations across the U.S. To find out more watch the videos below and visit their website at www.alter-g.com.
