When I first came across this concept wheelchair by Mauricio  Maeda, I was reminded of the candy colored iMacs that came out years ago. Though there is a lot more going on here besides the colors. Now Maeda is not a professional designer but a hobbyist in 3d software and has worked many years on factory production lines. He wanted to design something that could improve people’s lives while still looking great. Specifically a wheelchair that could do more than just get a person from A to B. What he came up with is basically a wheelchair that will cater to the tech, entertainment, gamer, and geek lover.

Here are the multiple features Maeda lists to make this wheelchair unique.

I’ve put a portable computer case under the seat, a joystick (to move the wheelchair), a trackball, a monitor, a keyboard, speakers, a wireless headset, a webcam, a drink holder, a stereo sound gadget(behind the seat), a power source on the back and a remote control.

He states that he could’ve added more features but feared it becoming a “Christmas Tree”. I’ll admit, as a tech and gadget lover I would happy to have this wheelchair for entertainment purposes. The joystick concept for control of the wheelchair could be attractive to certain younger demographic that might feel like they’re gaming while driving. However judging from the pictures, this wheelchair looks HUGE! So there might be some problems in maneuvering in tight spaces or going through doorways. The footrests are simple bars which would need a strap or something to keep feet in place. That being said, the look of this concept is pretty cool. The colors and molded pieces come together well and give a street racer look. The tech side of course speaks for itself.
