Bad Design Style: Case #19

Sometimes accessible modifications gone bad are due to trying to add onto an existing structure instead of going all new. Well this entrance doesn’t get to use that excuse. The stairs and ramp were built at the same time  and are both done very wrong.

First off, the ramp is obviously too steep with no edge protection. Plus the landing is way too small to even attempt opening the door from a wheelchair. What’s unusually bad here is that they raised the sidewalk up at an awkward angle. So turning onto the ramp from the sidewalk would be virtually impossible without tipping over. Now look at the landing at the bottom of the stairs. Part of it curves up to  meet the sidewalk. That’s a big tripping hazard for people walking over it. Basically this entrance is a big liability lawsuit in the making. There’s no excuse because there’s plenty of room to have done a proper ramp along the side of the building.
