Bad Design Style: Case #38
Ummmmm … noooo, that is incorrect. Let’s just say someone using a wheelchair goes up this ramp and then opens the door. Well then it’s like painting yourself into a corner. There’s a lot of other things wrong here but at the very very very least, the ramp should be to the right of the latch side so as to be out of the way of the door swing.
But like I said there are other things wrong at this entrance. First the ramp is too short and steep. Let’s say the stair risers are 7 inches high with an overall landing height of 14 inches. According to ADA standards this would require a ramp of at least 14 feet in length. This one doesn’t come close. Next the landing is way too small for a wheelchair to sit flat on. The minimum would be a 5ft x 5ft landing. So ideally this entrance would have a proper sized landing and a ramp running down the side of the building on the right.
