Bad Design Style: Case #59
This is the picture of a restaurant I went to the other day (Sorry for the blurriness. Didn’t realize it was that blurry till I uploaded the photo). A place I’ve gone to before at another location and this was my first time at this location. The food I will first say is absolutely delicious and fresh. But this is Bad Design Style and the focus here is the entrance to get in. What’s the problem? Well it’s the revolving door which is not wheelchair accessible.
ADA code does allow for revolving doors, but not as part of the accessible route. Another type of door(s) must be adjacent to the revolving door. Those doors must meet their own ADA requirements. Now there is a swinging door to the left of the column. However you have to open a gate into the patio area. Then that door puts you behind the hostess stand.
This restaurant was put into this strip mall recently so it should follow ADA compliance. They could make the argument that the swinging door is the accessible route and are therefore in ADA compliance. It’s a gray area that I would disagree with and it’s definitely not in the spirit of the ADA. Again, great food, but the entrance could be more accessible.
