Handy FX Children’s Wheelchair Concept Design

A couple days ago I wrote about the Krabat Sheriff children’s wheelchair which is an actual product you can purchase. A well designed wheelchair that has flexibility to adapt to different bodies and as a child grows. Here we have another children’s wheelchair that is designed to adapt to a growing child. This is the Handy FX by Spanish Strategic Product and Service Design student, Lander Balza.

Handy Dandy
The Handy FX has the same general shape and functions of a standard manual wheelchair. A seat, large side wheels, and a footrest. But then there are a few extra features that can adapt to a child’s growing body and situations.

Up and Down
Many of you are probably familiar with the office chairs that have a pneumatic cylinder underneath that can raise and lower the seat. The Handy FX has a similar feature that can raise and lower the seat with a simple lever switch. At the lowest point the footrests can stretch outward and allow the seat to go down to the floor. The footrest can flip up or down when needed.

Side to Side
As children grow, their body frames will get taller and wider. To help accommodate this, the Handy FX can grow also. The seat back is divided into three sections that are connected together with a spine. The top two pieces can slide up and down the spine to whatever height works best. If growth happens width-wise, then flaps attached to the seat can make the surface larger.

Conclusion
Even though this isn’t a real life product, there are still some nice features on here that could be useful. To see more of Lander Balza’s portfolio, visit this link.
