Sometimes in life there are things that seem like they would be a simple process but turn out to be complicated. Installation of grab bars can be one of those processes. Just putting them anywhere on the wall won’t work. You need to make sure you’re mounting to a stud or wood backing. If none are available, wall anchors can used but not on all types of walls will work. Plus all these processes involve drilling holes. Which some may not want to do on their nice and expensive tile walls. There’s also the risk of cracking the tile when drilling. To solve this dilemma, a no drill option is available. Nie Wieder Bohren (aka No Drilling Required) is grab bar mounting system that utilizes high strength adhesives. The grab bars can be found in some stores and online websites so many of you may already be familiar with them. But for those who are not let’s see how they work.

Appropriate Surfaces
First let’s talk about what types of surfaces are appropriate for the system to work with. Here’s a description from the Nie Wieder Bohren website:

nie wieder bohren is suitable with ceramic (tiles), stone, marble, granite, glass, concrete, metal, wood and most plastics. Unsuitable surfaces, on the other hand, include soft plaster, wallpaper, sheetrock and textiles (such as carpets), which do not provide sufficient firmness and support for surface attachments: There is no adhesion to polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon)

I would also be cautious of plastic or fiberglass surrounds because those walls could have some flex to them when pulled. Potentially damaging your shower surround.

No Holes, Ma!
Now for a quick description of the mounting process. Foam mounting pieces are first placed on the grab bar mounting points. The grab bar is then gently placed where desired on the wall. The grab bar is removed while the mounting pieces stay on the wall. Adhesive is then injected into the cavity between the wall and mounting piece. After a 24 hour curing period the grab bar is then remounted and secured to the wall.

Clean Removal
If a time comes when the grab bar needs to be removed, this can be easily done. First remove the grab bar. Then with the use of a tool, the mounting pieces are twisted off the wall. The remaining adhesive can then be removed with a razor blade, chemicals, and some elbow grease.

Conclusion
The grab bars are rated for 250lbs and Nie Wieder Bohren claims they will not fail over time and can withstand outdoor conditions. If installed properly of course. Watch the videos to see how the system works and visit www.NoDrillingRequired.com for more information.
