President H.W. Bush and ADA
Late last night President H.W. Bush passed away. For me personally and others in the disabilities community, his legacy will always be the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). I’m sure at the time in 1990, there was a lot of resistance to the act.
But for people with disabilities, this was a watershed moment. People with disabilities now had rights and could look forward to a more accessible world. Now it’s hard to image a world without the ADA.
For most of my professional life I have worked with people with disabilities. Much of that work has involved the ADA. President Bush deserves praise for the ADA being part of his legacy. I wish him eternal peace.
