Xbox One and Kinect 2 Possibilities

Over the past year I’ve featured a few stories about how researchers, developers, and designers are utilizing the abilities of Kinect to help people with disabilities. Some have used the motion capture technology to allow people to control devices and play games with mere eye movement and facial expressions. Others have concepts of interpreting sign language. This week Microsoft announced and showed off the next generation Xbox One and a second generation Kinect. The improved power and innovation of these devices opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Seeing More
First noticeable improvement is the camera. The camera can now record in high definition with a wider scope. This means that more detail can be detected and understood. The built in technology can now use this greater input in data and detect more minute motions by the body such as the opening and closing of hands. Greater input of smaller motions means increased control with more movements. Researchers who are making software that is controlled by eyes and facial movements will love this.

Body Monitoring
Another characteristic of the camera is its ability to read body vitals. Kinect has the ability to know which muscles are being used more strenuously than others based on the body’s movement. With the help of an infrared camera it can also give an estimated heart beat. While these features were designed mainly for exercise programs, the medical possibilities are definitely there.

Hands Free Control
Beyond video games, Xbox One aims to be an all in one home entertainment system. With internet connection it can download TV shows, movies, connect to Skype, and act as an internet browser. To operate all of these features you could use the controller. Or you could just use your voice because Kinect also has ears. Users will be able bring up what they want just by saying it. Giving many who could not use remote controls a way to be entertained independently.

Conclusion
These possibilities with the new Xbox One and Kinect are just what I could think of off the top of my head. What will come will be innovative ideas and uses that will be beyond anything I could think of. And I can’t wait to see it happen.
